Boyne Thunder is a yearly event. I have lived in Northern Michigan a long time but never was around to see more of this event. Weekends are usually spent outdoors and away from home in summer time.
From their website:
Speed, excitement and smiles return to northern Michigan for the 11th annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run on July 11 and 12, 2014 in beautiful Boyne City. This unique boating event showcases high performance boats, slicing through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 150-mile excursion.
The boats usually start to arrive a few days before the weekend and gathering in the lakefront park in Boyne City. A nice opportunity to see them up close and being impressed by their size.
This video was made in Charlevoix where the boats head out on Lake Michigan. Pretty impressive with the noise and speed right in front of the spectators. Unfortunately, I am not the best videographer so it’s a bit shaky and moves around a bit too much. But it captures the sights and sounds pretty good.

The Low Altitude 50′ boat deserves special mention because it’s powered by a twin turbine engines providing 4000 hp…! Unfortunately, I didn’t see and hear it going at speed. When it was idling going back in, it sounded like a jet airplane and the exhausts were blowing very hot air. Pretty amazing sight.
Here is a video where it reaches 182 MPH.
